| What is Spyware? |
|
Spyware is a generic term describing any software that secretly installs onto a computer or local network. It sneaks onto your computer without your permission and performs activities such as collect private and personal information, show pop-up and pop-under advertising, hijack your browser and alter your computer in a way that can cause damage. Please note that not all advertising may be spyware. Some advertising software such as some free services that you sign up for can deliver advertising that you may have agreed to have sent to you. This type of advertising is called opt-in advertising since you may have accepted to receive it and it is usually not considered spyware since it may just be a trade-off for getting a free service. But, once installed, real Spyware can do almost anything. Your personal information like e-mail addresses and credit cards information can be monitored and delivered to third parties without your knowledge. Spyware is constantly evolving and is a serious threat to security. You need a constant defense to combat it. |
